AMENITIES FOR SAILORS
Chaplain’s Task In N.Z.
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 1.
The Rev. Raymond W. Phillips, superintendent chaplain of 1 the British Sailors’ Society, London, arrived at Auckland in the Rangitoto today. The purpose of the appointment of Mr Phillips to New Zealand is to develop the society’s clubs, of which there are at present six in New Zealand. Mr Phillips said that the society regarded New Zealand as a very important country because of the tremendous amount of shipping between Britain and New Zealand, which brought consequently a large number of British sailors to the Dominion. He felt that, as strangers, these sailors had not sufficient amenities here.
However, Mr Phillips said that he was in no way criticising the existing organisations in New Zealand, which had done their utmost to cater for the British sailors. All his work entailed was to help them in this respect by making available more amenities. He said his territory included Australia as well. His main work would be to raise funds for the establishment of new clubs, and to make New Zealand even more “sailor-con-scious” than it is.
Mr Phillips is accompanied by his wife and youngest daughter. The society’s headquarters are in Dunedin.
