U.S. POLICY ON INTEGRATION
Explanation To Be Given To U.N. (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 30. The United States will explain to the United Nations tomorrow the Government’s policy on integration.
Informed quarters said today that Mr George Meany, a United States delegate to the General Assembly, would take up the issue before the General Assembly’s 82-nation Social and Humanitarian Committee. So far the integration problem has had little mention in the United Nations, although delegates are known to have followed the Little Rock developments closely.
There was no official explanation for the reason the United States delegation decided to bring up the issue.
Governor Orval E. Faubus said today that he had made no decision yet on whether to call the Arkansas Legislature into special session to consider closing the Central High School. Mr Faubus told reporters: “It is very likely there will be a special session.” He added: ‘‘There has been no decision yet, and it very well could be that there will be no special session.” At the troop-guarded Central High School, the second week of integrated education began peacefully. A reduced force of paratroopers, with bayonets removed from their rifles, stood guard when the nine negro children entered the school without incident.
In Atlanta, Georgia, today Governor Marvin Griffin said he would not attend a meeting of Southern Governors with President Eisenhower in Washington tomorrow.
Mr Griffin,- a Democrat and ardent segregationist, was named last week to a five-man committee from the Southern Governors’ conference, which had adopted a resolution asking the President to discuss the withdrawal of Federal troops from Little Rock. The Governor noted that the Chief Executive had accepted the Governors’ offer to confer, but only with the stipulation that the problems of school integration be discussed. The governors’ resolution had specified that only the matter of the troops should be considered.
