TEST OF BOMB SHELTERS
Little Damage In Atom Blast
LAS VEGAS, Sept. 30.
The United States Atomic Energy Commission disclosed yesterday that tests of French and West German shelters in a powerful atomic detonation on August; 31 had proved that lives could be saved in nuclear attack.
The blast was stronger than those which had hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The tests were very satisfactory, the A.E.C. said. The nine German and two French shelters were subjected to an “above nominal”, shot at the Nevada proving grounds. The commission said that the shelters all stood up under the blast, and most of the damage was superficial and above ground. The A.E.C. said all the sealed doors which had been locked appeared to be undamaged. Ventilation devices apparently worked properly, and pressures were satisfactory inside most of the shelters after the blast. Ramps, stairways, and landings on some structures were damaged extensively, but they did not collapse.
