NEW BURNSIDE CLUB

Progress In Formation Progress has been made m the formation of a Rugby football club in the Fendalton district. At a meeting held on Thursday night, a committee and other officers were elected, colours were chosen, and the name of the Burnside Rugby Football Club was approved by members present. „ , The Burnside and Fendalton Schools intimated their approval of the formation of a club in the district, and offered to assist where Sosslble. Dailey said that le Canterbury Rugby Union also hoped the club would succeed, as there were many children in the district but no club there to cater <o Mr th Daliey moved that application be made to the Rugby Union for the temporary use of Fendalton Park as a home ground for the club. The motion was carried. “No club's got Fendalton Park. You could make it your home ground if you wanted to in the meantime, said Mr Dailey. "Over there there a a pavilion and a ground all ready. Members agreed that the park would be the most central and suitable, especially until the club and other parks in the district developed, A motion was passed that the club ask the Rugby Union for permission that the colours of the club be red and white hooped jerseys with black shorts. The club will seek registration by the Rugby Union as soon as possible. “I would suggest early next year you go around these schools to their sports masters and get boys, ’ said Mr Dailey. Representatives of the Fendalton School said that their school would welcome their boys playing for the club, but hoped that the children would still attend (school practices. Fund-raising schemes .were discussed, and a licensed raffle is planned. _ a The following officers were elected, —president, Mr L. Esplin; dents, Messrs R. Moir and w. Smith; secretary, Mr D. S. Hart; treasurers Mr J Hunter; committee, Mrs B. Hunter, Messrs R. Booth, J. S. G. Lester, D. Aljsopp, K. Blair, and H. N. Ede.

CANTABRIANS’ TEAM Match Against West Coast Thirteen former All Blacks will be in the Cantabrians Rugby team to nlav the West Coast on October 5. at Hokitika. The other two, J. B. S. Hutchinson and T. D. Coughlan, are New Zealand Universities and South Island plavers respectively. Two of the reserves are All Blacks, and managers, Peter Eastgate and Kevin Meates. are former New Zealand representatives. Unions represented by the players range from Auckland to Southland, and the full-back, N. J. Bowden, has also played for California. Three New Zealand captains are included in the side: they are W. N. Gray, who captained the New Zealand Maoris: R. H. Duff, an All Black captain; and S. F. Hill, who has also captained New Zealand. The curtain-raiser for the match will be played between a West Coast side comprising members of the good 1953 team, who are not required for the main game\and the Westland sub-union team. WHINERAY MAY GO TO AUCKLAND "The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. Sept. 20. Wilson Whineray, the All Black prop forward, who has been selected for the New Zealand Colts Rugby team to tour Japan, may return to his home town, Auckland, after completing his agricultural course at Canterbury Agricultural College. Lincoln. in November

Whineray, who is employed by the farms division of the State Advances Corporation, is expecting a transfer, and he has indicated that he would like to return to Auckland. He has played for Canterbury for the last two seasons.

Any move he makes is not likely to be permanent, as he said that for the next few years he could expect a transfer every year or two. Whineray is under bond to remain with the State Advances Corporation for another five years.
