ROYAL VISIT TO U.S.
Protocol To Be Abandoned
(Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, September 18. Protocol will be abandoned when the Queen meets thousands of Americans at a Commonwealth reception during the Royal visit to Washington in October. The State Department advises that • guests should be guided by common sense, rather than stiff protocol, when they are presented to the Royal couple. “A lot of the rules will not be insisted on,” one official said today. After consultation with British Embassy officials, the State Department has drawn up a list of unofficial suggestions for Americans who will be presented to the Queen for the first time. Some of these suggestions are: There is no hard and fast rule about curtseying. Black dresses are not desirable, but formal or informal attire are equally acceptable. The Queen, it was stated, does not want and does not expect anyone to go to unnecessary expense in buying new clothes. The guests may talk to the Queen before they are addressed by Her Majesty if they want to, but it is not desirable to engage her in conversation while thousands of people are waiting to meet the Royal couple.
