South Pole Base Director
DAVISVILLE (Rhode Island). September 18. A Danish-born United States Army officer, Major Palle Mogensen, will command the ScottAmundsen Base at the South Pole in 1958. He will rep l ace Dr. Paul Siple, who has been in charge of the base since the beginning of this year. Major Mogensen was deputy leader of the combined United States Army-Navy party which broke a heavy sled tractor trail from Little America, on Kainan Bay, 600 miles into Marie Byrd Land, over the Rockefeller Plateau last summer. He was in Greenland in 1946 and spent two seasons there before going to the Antarctic. In his first season he was a member of a party which broke a 60-mile trail through the marginal glacial zone on to the high ice cap. Dr. Willis Tressler, aged 54. will direct Wilkes Station, Dr. Stephen S. Barnes, aged 42, will head the Byrd Station, and Dr. Matthew Brennan, aged 40, will head the Ellsworth Station. Dr. Albert P. Clary, aged 46. will continue as station scientific leader at the Little America Station.
