CAMPAIGN IN MALAYA
N.Z. Success In Kluang Area
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) KLUANG (Malaya), Sept. 16. The security forces today announced success in a nine years’ campaign to crush Communist terrorists in the jungles and swamps in Kluang, one of Malaya’s worst terrorist areas. Police and military chiefs told reporters that there were only 46 terrorists left in the district. They said if pressure were maintained and if the villagers co-operated there was a chance that Kluang would be declared “white”—free of guerrillas—by Christmas. Another Gurkha battalion sfrill shortly reinforce two other Gurkha battalions operating in the area. The police have 20 armed security units arrayed against the bandits. An official statement said that the Kluang district had been the operational area of the New Zealand Squadron of the Special Air Regiment since last year. Because of the New Zealanders’ relentless harassment six Communist terrorists, including a district committee member, had been killed and a total of five had surrendered
