Troops Take Over Brazilian Town
(N.Z. Press Associatian—CopVTigM) (Rec. 10 p.m.) MACEIO (Brazil). September 15. President Juscelino Kubitschek stepped into the political dispute here today and named General Armando de Morals Ancora to take charge of the Federal troops maintaining order. Troops continued to be deployed throughout this city of 130.000 in Alagoas State, where two men were killed and seven wounded in the Legislature on Friday. Mr Kubitschek ordered General Ancora to intervene on behalf of the Federal Government and attempt to settle the local political controversy. Maceio looked like a besieged city, with 600 soldiers patrolling the streets and occupying strategic points. In addition, Maceio (population 130,000) was without water or electric power, since unknown saboteurs shot up the municipality’s generators.
