EXAMINATION ENTRY

University Record This Year

Students from Canterbury University College will be sitting examinations in Commercial Law, Geology and Latin when the University examinations begin less than six weeks from now, on October 29. The examinations, which are conducted by the college for the University of New Zealand, start at 9.30 a.m. on Tuesday after Labour week-end. A record number of entries has been received this year, with 2113 of the 2444 internal and external students at the college sitting papers. Of these, 308 are engineering students in their first professional or subsequent years, and 64 are studying fine arts. The remainder are mainly science, arts, commerce, music, law and accounting students. The examinations conducted by the college finish on November 16, and are followed by those set by the University of New Zealand ,in the next fortnight. The University conducts the examinations for law and accountancy professionals, banking and architecture. AU other examinations are conducted by the colleges internally. The 2113 students will be sitting more than 300 papers, in a wide variety of subjects, ranging from stage 1 to masters degrees. The subjects include ancient history, ’Russian, anthropology, radiophysics, church history and acoustics. Most subjects have two papers, but some have three or four. Entries for the examination closed on June IJ, but late entries were accepted up to July 1 on the payment of a late fee of £2 2s, and after that, if approved. with a late fee of £5 ss. Late entries numbered 135, about 5 per cent, of the entries. The arrangement of the examination timetables is a long and tedious task for the staff of the college registry, as all entries must be gone through to make sure that no clashes occur, and that no student is required to sit two exaniinations at the same time. Examinations are arranged so that the great majority of students will not have to sit two examinations in a day, and to ensure an even spread of papers.
