SOLD BEER WITHOUT LICENCE
£l5O Fine Imposed
(New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NTH., Sept. 2. There was nothing that could be said for the offence of selling liquor by a man not the holdei of a licence, said Mr D. G. Sinclair, S.M.. in the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court today, when he fined Frank Laurence Farr, a taxi-driver, £75 on each of two charges. Inspector H. O. Hansen said a police constable had bought liquor from the defendant on August 9, and on the following day he took the taxi home and brught more liquor from the driver. Other police officers were waiting there, and when a search warrant was executed, six more bottles of beer were found. Farr had been selling liquor for the last 18 months at 30s a dozen. It was not known to what extent the defendant had been trading, but such a practice was “most undesirable.”
For the defendant, Mr A. R. Caskie said the facts were admitted. Farr had not known that it was illegal to “oblige” his customers. There had been no profit on the transactions. In addition to the fines of £75. costs of £1 were allowed in each case and an order was made for the confiscation of other liquor found in the taxi.
