Obituary MR R. J. ORBELL
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, S«bt. 1. Mr Reginald John Orbell, a pioneer in the radio industry in New Zealand has died in Auckland at the age of 60. He was born in Geraldine and received his education at Waitaki Boys’ High School and, Christ’s College and later studied for his bachelor of engineering degree at Canterbury University College. Mr Orbell became interested in radio before the First World War, During the war he served in France with the New Zealand Signal Corps. In 1924, he went to England to gain experience in radio.
On his return to New Zealand he joined the original New Zealand Broadcasting Company and was for a period in charge of Station IYA. Mr Orbell went to the Antarctic in 1929 with Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd, as a radio onerator. During the Second World War he was responsible for the design and production of many thousands of radio transmitters for the New Zealand armed forces. In 1944 he was selected by the Government to go to England and 4 assist in the production of specialised radar equipment.
