Russia’s Plans

(Rec. 10 p.m.) MONTREAL, September 2. Dr. Ivan Bardin, the president of the Soviet Union’s Geophysical Year organisation, said yesterday that the Soviet Union, expected to launch its first earth satellite later this year or early in 1958. Dr. Bardin, one of the Soviet Union’s top scientists, said his country would “definitely be using satellites” for its I.G’.Y. studies. He is heading a group of about 50 Soviet scientists on their way to the 12-day congress of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics which will open in Toronto tomorrow. They made a brief stay in Montreal.

Dr. Bardin said' he and his fellow travellers expected to spend a great deal of time with Canadian scientists discussing the problems created by climatic conditions common to both countries.

He said he hoped the Canadian experts would be able to answer some of the Russians' questions. The Soviet group, -which includes five women, applauded the aims of the International Geophysical Year in which 63 nations are taking part for the furtherance of science. Dr. Bardin said the Soviet Union had built many new research stations to aid in its studies. A special delegation of Russian experts was expected to visit the United States shortly to discuss mutual problems connected with the perfection of earth satellites and high altitude rockets.

As a Royal Australian Air Force guard of honour at Fairbairn Air Station presented arms, field guns boomed a 21-gun salute and a light of jet aircraft flew overhead.—Canberra, Sept. 2.
