“Old Gabriel”
J‘Old Gabriel”—the massive figure at the Otago Advances Fair, symbolising former times when industry was beginning in Otago—will be a feature of the next Industries Fair in Christchurch. It was made by a Christchurch firm in five parts at a cost of more than £550. Negotiations had been opened by the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association for the use of the figure, said Mr F. L. Hitchens, secretary of the OtagoSouthland Manufacturers’ Association. It would be dismantled and transported by road to Christchurch, w’here waterproofing and rat-proofing would be done in preparation for the open-air exhibition.
