FISHING INDUSTRY AT CHATHAMS
625 Tons Caught During 1956
The fishing catch for the year at the Chatham Islands amounted to about 625 tons, for which the fishermen received more than £15,500, says the 1956 annual report of the Department of Island Territories.
Although the land-based freezer at Owenga virtually closed down during the year, having handled only about 50 tons of uncleaned .fish, the vessel Coromel continued in the fishing trade at the islands, and the Marlyn joined the industry as a mothership to the fishing launches, of which there are five, employing about 30 men.
The batch from the Marlyn is being sold to the Coromel, which conveys it to New Zealand along with the fish Caught under her own fishing licence. As the fish exported does not now pass over the wharf at Waitangi, the Chatham Islands County Council derives no direct revenue from this source. On the other hand, the council has not been handicapped with excess expenditure on the Owenga road repairing damage caused by the heavy fish lorries.
