N.Z. TEAM BEATS N.S.W.

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 1. New Zealand easily won the 10,000metre cross-country teams* race against New South Wales at Centennial Park yesterday afternoon. New Zealanders finished second, third, fifth and sixth. The individual race was won brilliantly by the Australian Olympic representative, Dave Power, who avenged his defeat by Murray Halberg (New Zealand) in the national cross-country championship at Brisbane last Saturday. Power led all the way and finished almost 60 yards ahead of Halberg, with Kerry Williams (New Zealand) five yards further back, third. It was the first time since 1935 that a New Zealand harrier team has competed in Sydney. Power was the master all the way, excelling in the sandy sections and over the fences. Halberg and Nev. Scott shared the early lead with Power and Graham Thomas. Scott found the pace too hot, and finished sixth. Two of the State’s best athletes missed the event because of leg injuries. They are Albert Thomas, the Olympic 5000-metre finalist, and Les Wakefield. Denis Moore and Stan Chaiton took their places. Power’s time, 32min 27-2 sec, was excellent for* the course, but the New Zealand runners claimed the course was very easy by New Zealand standards: The New Zealand team was: Halberg, Williams, and Sidden. The result of the 10,000 metres was:—D. Power (N.S.W.), 32min 27.25ec, 1; M. Halberg (N.Z.), 32min 42sec, 2; R. Williams (N.Z.), 32min 45sec, 3; G. Thomas (N.S.W.), 32min 49sec, 4; P. Sidden (N.Z.), 38min 04sec, 5; N. Scott (N.Z.), 23min Msec. 6: R. Ollerenshaw (N.S.W.), 33min 43sec, 7; J. Pierce (NS W.), 34min llsec, 8; J. Jullian (N.Z.). 34min 24sec, 9; M. Hiillar (N.Z.), 34min 26sec, 10; D. Moore (N.S.W.), 34min 42sec, 11; S. Chaiton (N.S.W.), 34min 46sec, 12.
