TULLOCH SUCCEEDS IN WARWICK STAKES

(N.Z. Press Association—Copy ng nt)

(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 1. The New Zealand-bred colt Tulloch beat a strong Held in the weight-for-age Warwick Stakes at Warwick Farm jesterday, and became outright favourite for the A.J.C. Derby. Tulloch forced his way through a narrow opening between Kingster and Prince Jambo at the furlong post and won by a neck. The six-year-old Prince Jambo was second, and Kingster (2-1 favourite) third. , Sydney racegoers are now eagerly awaiting Tulloch’s first clash with the brilliant Todman. They may meet in the Canterbury Guineas next Saturday. Tulloch’s performance yesterday is considered better than Todman’s run in the Hobartville Stakes last week. Handily placed in the early stages | —third on the rails—Tulloch was 1 checked when Concert Star dropped back quickly at the turn into the straight. He was then behind Mandingos, Kingster, and Prince Jambo, poised ready for a final dash. An opening apparently did not come quickly enough for the apprentice rider, F. Leman, so he "bullocked” Tulloch between Kingster and Prince Jambo. For 50 yards Tulloch appeared to be squeezed for room, but with sheer brilliance he forced his way through and shot to the front to win by a neck. Tulloch (Khorassan (Imp.)-Florida) has now had eight wins from 14 starts. He has been second the other six times. His stake winnings are now approximately £ 19.084.

Main Spring Mission His trainer, T. J. Smith, said after the race that he was more confident than ever that Tulloch would win both the A.J.C. and Victorian Derbys. Those two races are his main spring mission. .... « The New Zealand-bred Metropolitan favourite. Macdougal, ran a good race to finish eighth after being among the tail-enders at the home Tulloch’s stablemate, Cardigan, ridden by George Moore, was never a chance, and finished eleventh after tailing the field to the turn. The New Zealand grey, Zariba, seemed to have fined down and should have derived benefit from the rU The dual Derby winner, Monte Carlo, looked well ... T „ The New Zealand (seventh), has never looked fitter, although she raced only moderately U Th e S S mi th 3 stable followed up Tulloch’? win with another win bv a New Zealand-bred horse in the 10J furlong Rossmore Handicap. Certosa (Faux Tirage Abbess), bought as a yearling by Smith for 3000 guineas, won by a length and a auartetr from Royal Heroic and Windsor Grev. Ridden perfectly by Moore, Certosa had the race won a long way from home, and was not under pressure in the straight. It was Moores first winning ride since he returned from France. Smith has now won seven Metronolitan races since he returned from a holiday visit to Japan a fortnight agoAkatarawa Second The New Zealand horse. Akatarawa. lost his chance of winning the

Wallacia Handicap, six furlongs, when he attempted to savage My Peter 20 yards from the post. In a head-and-head tussle over the last 50 yards. My Peter (3/1) beat Akatarawa (3/1), in a photo-finish. The New Zealand-bred Gay Sierra finished three-quarters of a length away third. Akatarawa had mastered My Peter, and was about half a head in front, when he turned his head and made as if to bite the other horse. | His jockey, N. Sellwood, put more pressure on the nearside rein to keep Akatarawa away from My Peter, and this gave My Peter the narrow winning advantage. The trainer, Maurice McCarten. said after the race that this habit had been shown in previous races, and could heve cost Akatarawa at least two other wins. Results:— WARWICK STAKES, Of £l5OO.
