SOUTH AMERICAN BANANAS
Shipment Expected At Auckland
A shipment of 30.000 bunches of bananas for New Zealand is now being loaded at the port of Guayaquil, in Ecuador, in the Danish motor-vessel Argentine Reefer. She is expected to arrive at Auckland on September 16. This will be the first shipment of bananas on the bunch for 40 years, and the first ever to come from South America. Bananas from the South Sea Islands. New Zealand’s normal source of supply, are always packed in cases. At the present time. Fiji. Samoa, and Tonga cannot meet their usual commitments for the local market. After discharging the bananas, the Argentine Reefer will load a cargo of frozen beef at Auckland. Napier, and Wellington for Janan Later she will return to New Zealand to load beef for Honolulu. San Francisco and Los Angeles. The Egyptian Reefer is expected to arrive in New Zealand from Europe late in November to load beef for Japan. Both ships are fast fruit-carriers of the numerous fleet of J. Lauritzen, of Copenhagen, one of the principal shinowners in Denmark. The Egyptian Reefer is a singlescrew vessel of 3130 tons gross register, built in 1936. The Argentine Reefer, built in 1945, is a twin-screw vessel of 2808 tons.
