Flats
Sir,—“ln five months a bank in Venezuela built 16 ultra-mod-ern flat units in park land at Caracas, housing 4000 of the capiI tai’s 500,000 population.” As photographed, no unit appears to cast shadow upon another, whereas blocks of Sydney flats are jammed in between old homes and the noisy harbour bridge. If useful attractive fiats are contemplated for countering “sprawl” in our cities’ environs, is it expecting too much to hope that plans are considered for the health and convenience of tenants and neighbours who also require sunshine? Is the fate of St. Elmo Courts forgotten? A useful block of flats served the city well until confiscated for other purposes than housing citizens. What guarantee would stand that well-situated blocks, built now, might not share the same fate from office or factory crowding out those in desirable situations?—Yours, etc., FROM ALL ANGLES.
