INDOOR BOWLS
Canterbury Singles To R. Fridd
The Canterbury indoor bowling championships, held last evening, proved another triymph for 18-year-old Ron Fridd, of the Riccarton club. Fridd, who. in partnership with his mother won the New Zealand pairs’ title at the New Zealand championships at Invercargill, gave a magnificent display in the singles throughout the tourney. In his final he bowled with the coolness of a veteran.
In the semi-final, Fridd from the behind position made a brilliant shot to take the game when his opponent lay three up in the final head. The same position arose in the ..final, for Fridd, who had maintained a lead almost for the whole of the Same, was faced with his opponent having four bowls, which would hstve drawn the game and called for an additional head. Fridd played his last bowl, ,and with a magnificent shot reversed positions to lay one up to take the game, 15-10. Results of the games from the post-section play were as follows: — L. Greer (Watersiders) beat C. King (Fletcher Holdings), C. Holliss (Vetft-ans) beat R. Melhopt (Watersiders), S. Pike (Halswell) beat T. Coup (Kaiapoi R.S.A.), C. Ward (Post Office) beat A. Williamson (Pioneer), E. Hansen (Watersiders) beat N. Hocking (Arawa), P. Nee (Spreydon) beat D. Higham (Arawa), E. Blacklock (U.F.S.) beat H.- Mercer (Arawa), R. Fridd (Riccarton) beat K. Smith (Railway). Quater-finals: Holliss beat Greer, Pike beat Ward. Hansen beat Nee. Fridd beat Blacklock., Semi-finals: Pike beat Holliss, Fridd beat Hansen. Final: Fridd beat Pike.
