SINGER’S 97th BIRTHDAY

MrE.J. Hill Of Auckland (New Zealand Press Association j AUCKLAND, Sept. 1. Mr E. J. (‘Teddy”) Hill celebrated his ninety-eeventh birthday today with a group of friends and relatives. A brother of the composer, Alfred Hill, he was the “silver tenor” of New Zealand music many years ago, and sang principal roles in 13 operas, five operettas, nine oratorios, and 15 cantatas. Mr Hill showed today that he could still hit the top notes of his favourite songs. With no lapses of memory, he sang the piece comprised by his brother at the age of 17. “Wilt Thou Be My Dearie?” This was followed by “Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes.” and then a sparkling “Waiata Poi.” Mr Hill was born on a ship off the Cape of Good Hope. Although he began his musical career by winning a prize in the Auckland competitions at the age of 13, most of his subsequent work was done when living in Wellington. He did not come to Auckland until he was 77. A keen bowler, he won every championship in the Wellington Bowling Club, and was later a member of the Carlton Bowling Club in Auckland.
