COMPETITION GAMES

Nomads Win From City The senior division Hurley Shield Soccer competition was continued on Saturday, Nomads meeting Christchurch Citjf in the main game at Park. Neither side displayed the form of earlier matches this season, Nomads doing the better-to win by 3 goals to 1.. In the earlier match, Western won easily from Neerlandia, and at Beckenham Park, Atlantis just got home from University. Results: Nomads 3, Christchurch City 1. Western 9, Neerlandia 1. Atlantis 2, University L Points in the competition, with games played in parenthesis, are: Western 24 (14), Technical Old Boys 23 «(13), Nomads 22 (15), Shamrock 18 (14), Christchurch City (14) (15), Neerlandia 13 (15), Atlantis 7 (14), University 5 (13). ATLANTIS v. UNIVERSITY Aganist a weak University side, Atlantis made heavy weather of the game at Beckenham Park, and not until full time was the winning goal scored. The Atlantis forwards were weak in front of goal, and L. Taylor, the inside left, was continually being penalised in an off-side position.

Play opened scrappily, with Atlantis having a territorial advantage, but there was a lot of aimless kicking, and L. Duckworth, the University goal-keeper, was not unduly troubled. However, after 15 minutes, Duckworth made only a partial clearance from a loose ball by D. Ballisat/ and D. Sorter was on hand to heaa the ball in. University was playing the long ball down the middle to give D. Adams a chance to use his superior speed against J. Hegerty, and it was from one of these balls that Adams sent in a well placed ground shot that gave J. Donnelly no chance. Atlantis was on tpp for most of the second half, but the best shot of the game was by A. Newman, University centre half, whose shot hit the crossbar with Donnelly well beaten. When the game looked like petering out into a tame draw, D. Soder seized on a weak goal kick and scored to give Atlantis a win. For the winner, J. Donnelly had an easy game for a change, and dealt competently with the few good shots he had. G. Butterworth was the best back on view, with N. Hughes giving him good support. J. Hegerty was the' best of the halves, mainly because A. Condie tried to achieve too much. J. Moore, Atlantis outside right, had few chances, being poorly fed. J. Miller, his partner, although showing promise, is not yet robust enough for senior football. D. Ballisat, at outside left, was the pick of the forwards, always trying to do something intelligent with the ball. For University, the goal-keeper, Duckworth, had a good game, although he would look safer if he fielded some of the high balls instead of palming them over the bar. G» Coote was the safer of the two backs, although J. Roborgh did a lot of good things, but was inclined to miss his kick now and then. A. Newman was a solid centre half, but H. Trethowan was a little out of his class at right half. As was to be expected, P. Feenstra and D. Adams were the pick of the forwards Feenstra scheming all the time to give Adams that break down the middle that threatened the Atlantis goal. The left wing, D. Foote and R. Freeman, tried hard, especially who had a good game. The referee was Mr G. Royce.

NOMADS v. CHRISTCHURCH CITY In a game that produced little good football. Nomads beat Christchurch City by 3 goals to 1. In some previous games, Nomads have shown that they can win their way through defenders by accurate , short-passing movements, but although ground conditions were good, they seldom showed ability in this direction on Saturday. In this respect. City was disappointing also. The result was a true indication of the game. Nomads being a little stronger in midfield play and on attack. An unusual feature. of the game was that both the regular goalkeepers were on the sick list, their places being taken by the two centre-forwards. In this respect. Nomads were the more fortunate, D. Ennis proving himself a satisfactory keeper, but J. Quickendom gave Nomads forwards a number of chances, and it was only the efforts of the backs that kept the Nomads score down. At right back for City was A. juner who has just arrived in Christchurch from Wellington. Juner has

represented Wellington on numerous occasions and played for New Zealand in the second test against the Austrians, and he gave proof of his ability on Saturday. T. Clackson was a good partner for Juner, his efficient marking of I. McCallum practically ruling him out of the ?ame. M. Wild gave little away as centre half, and K. Nuttall gave good service on the flank. G. Wright, a junior player sent across some good balls from the wing, but P. Devine, another young player spoilt his game by trying to take the ball too far. D. Worthington saw little of .the ball at centre forward and had few chances.

I. Graham usually centre half played at right back for Nomads, B. Shaw filling the ' centre position. With. B. Prebble as the other back, they proved an efficient defensive trio. D. Simmonds and D. Stapely were the steadier pair of flankhalves, but their long passes were not as well directed as usual. On his day, A. Van Rooyen is a good inside forward, and Saturday was his day. He worked hard and the City defence found him a difficult man to mark. , J. Bouhuis disappointed, his centres and shooting being poor. J. Newell kept position well at centre forward and scored one goal and made another for Van Rooyen. City opened strongly, J. Gordon missing first and then Wright came near to scoring with a header from Worthington’s centre. Ennis brought off three good saves and then Nomads attacked, Newell making an opening for Van Rooyen to goal. City returned play to the Nomads goal, Devine. Worthington and Wright all shooting ineffectively. Just before half-time, Bouhuis centred and Newell scored with a well timed header. City scored a good goal, Juner taking the ball upfield before sending on to Gordon who found Worthington with his centre, the centre forward ■ side-footing it past the goal-keeper. Van Rooyen put Nomads further ahead with a strong left foot drive from Stapely s long pass. Nomads had several more attempts at goal before the final whistle, but the shots went wide. The referee was Mr C. Anderson.

WESTERN v. NEERLANDIA Western played Neerlandia in the early match at English Park, played some good football to win by 9 goals to 1. Scoring within- two minutes ot the start, Western went ahead to lead 5-0 at half-time. Moving the ball well, halves and torwards combined to produce some attractive movements. There was no scoring in the first 20 minutes of the second half, players throwing away chances when they attempted to score instead of sending on to teammates better placed than themselves, but in the latter stages of the game, combined play produced four more goals, and Neerlandia scored the final goal of the match. Although Neerlandia was frequently on attack, the shooting was poor, and H. Langley in goal for Western was seldom in difficulties. M. Shardlow at left back played well, his height enabling him to use his head to good effect.- Neerlandia attacks down the middle were well contained by A. Laffey, who had the better of his duel with the opposing centre-forward. W. Shannon was played at left half, A. McLaren moving up to inside forward. Shannon had a satisfactory game, and McLaren’s ball control and accurate passing strengthened the Western attack. Scoring three goals and having a hand in several others, P. Saunderson had a good day, even though he was playing on the right wing instead of his usual position on the left.

B. Botterman, who has transferred from Nomads,' was goalkeeper for Neerlandia. P. Feringa defended well as full back, as did A. Van der Lely, the centre-half. Left half' A. Tought played good football and gave good service to Jiis forwards, but the opportunities he afforded them were largely wasted. Most of the Neerlandia attacks came from the left flank, with R, Campfens as winger and S. Wilson inside him. Wilson had several shots at goal, but his shooting was wild. Western scored early, McLaren goaling from Durant’s centre. Saunderson centred for Whitehead to score, and then Saunderson scored himself. Another goal by Saunderson made Western’s tally four, and before half-time, Durant added another to complete, a good passing bout between McLaren and Whitehead. A corner by Saunderson was volleyed by Longmuir as it ran across the goal, and Whitehead finished off the move, and Steel scored a great solo goal when he ran round the Neerlandia defence to shoot from close quarters. Langley was drawn out of position, and Shardlow raced across to save, and then Feringa sent in a shot that rah along the bar. At this stage, Neerlandia had several chances, but Langley had no trouble with a number of weak shots. Saunderson and McLaren both scored again before Neerlandia scored its only goal. Beltman breaking through to beat Shardlow and Laffey and score from close range. . ~ The referee was Mr L. Tointon.
