HUNT MEETING AT GORE
Canon Selected In Main Race
"The Special Service • INVERCARGILL, August 30. The new season’s racing will open in Southland with the Eastern Southland Hunt Club’s meeting at Gore tomorrow,
Canon will be a firm first choice for the main fiat event and first leg of the double, the President’s Handicap, in which he will be meeting a much weaker field than he beat at Wingatui last week. The feature event is the Duke of Gloucester Cup, for amateur riders, the second leg of the double. The withdrawal of Rex Robe, Lord Garnish, and Cocos leaves the issue open, and at this stage, Fault, Participation, and The, Plainsman may have most in their favour. Indications are for fine weather, and the track with the sting out of it will provide good going. The scratching of Good' Abbot, Patrls, Red Boa, and Baffling Eyes from the President’s Handicap will reduce the field to. six runners. Canon is one of the few in the field which has had the benefit of recent racing; Glenpark will start in it in preference to the Mandeville Hack Handicap, and he may be the one to make a race of it with the topweight. Of the others, Armando looks the most likely improver. Selections:— 11.30 fc.m.—Kennels Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles: Pitlochry, Sarkey, Le Roi. 12.15 p.m.—Knapdale Stakes No. 1: Barana, Janlo, Dazzling Fox. 1 p.m.—President’s Handicap: Canon, Glenpark, Armando. 1.45 p.m.—Wayte Memorial Steeplechase: Delarmo, Participation, Peter Lo. * 2.30 p.m.—Knapdale Stakes No. 2: Paper Clip, Moon El Nil, 3.15 p.m.—Duke of Gloucester Cup': Fault, Participation, The Plainsman. 4 p.m..—Eastern Southland Steeplechase : Stormtide, ■ Miss Step, Sir Echo. 4.45 p.m.—Mandeville Hack Handicap: Bobbie Burns, Seadune, Recluse.
