Otira Gorge Road

Sir,—-In a preliminary report on the formation of a dray road through the gorge, in April, 1865, Mr Edward Dobson wrote: “Through the Otira Gorge there will be about 20 chains of heavy rock cutting, but there is no real difficulty about the whole matter,' provided the necessary funds can be obtained.” This morning’s paper reports'* a statement that the Otira Gorge would never become an all-weather road. The report of 1865 contains the answer to the problem of 1957, and when these funds are available I am certain the engineers will not be too worried about the elements. In the meantime, unjustified notoriety is added to the existing route.— Yours, etc., R. W. CLELAND. Arthur’s Pass, August 30, 1957.
