ISLANDS’ SHIP MAUI POMARE
Loss Of £67,983 Last Year
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 30. A net los% for the year of £67,983 is shown in the working account of the Government motorvessel, Maui Pomare, according to the annua] report of the Department of Island Territories tabled in the House of Representatives. The report says that the vessel resumed in the Cook Islands trade ii) April, 1956. after a major overhaul.
The Maui Pomare is now in its thirty-first year of service. Plans and specifications are being drawn for a new refrigerated vessel with a cargo capacity of 60,000 to 70,000 cubic feet, accommodation for 40 passengers, and a speed of 12 to 14 knots This vessel will replace the 'Maui Pomare.
During the financial year ended March 31, the Maui Pomare made 11 voyages to the Islands. Passengers carried from New Zealand numbered 287 and to New Zealand 332.
Outward cargoes from New Zealand amounted to 6915 tons. Inward cargoes included 50,000 cases of tomatoes, 33,000 cases of oranges, 16,000 cases of pineapples, smaller quantities of many other fruits, and 26 tons of pearl shell.
