DEVOLUTION IN UNIVERSITY
Senate Retains Authority
Legislation to change the names of the constituent colleges to universities (for example, University of Canterbury) should definitely come before Parliament before the end of the present session, the Director of Education (Mr C. C. Beeby) told the Senate of the University of New Zealand. The draft had been approved by the Cabinet The Vice-Chancellor (Dr. G. A. Currie) emphasised that pending legislation would involve name changes only. Although devolution of authority to the colleges had been proceeding for some years, the University Act, which conferred the Senate’s powers, was still substantially the same. The Chancellor (Sir David Smith) said that after the change in names the degrees would still be those of the University of New Zealand—“at least in the meantime.” This discussion arose from reports that the present annual meeting of the Senate might be the last in this form held in Christchurch. Members said that although that might be so, the public should appreciate that the University of New Zealand and the Senate were not yet superseded.
