MESSAGE BY HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR OF CHRISTCHURCH 9 August, 1957. I would like to take this opportunity of congratulating all those responsible /or organising Book Week in Christchurch and commending the project. I sincerely trust that their efforts will make us increasingly aware of the importance of good books. These can and should be our close companions throughout life. Books play a vital part in our education, their intelligent use being the basis of many a story of success. Suitable ones are freely available to enrich our lives with a wealth of accumulated experience and knowledge, as well as to provide a most satisfactory type of recreation. As the time available for reading can be all too short, let us devote what there is to best advantage by reading books that are “worthwhile,” always remembering that good books need not be dull ones. R. M. MACFARLANE, C.M.G., M.P. MAYOR.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE NEW ZEALAND LIBRARY ASSOCIATION 5 August, 1957. To The Christchurch Children’s Book Week Committee. I extend to you my very best wishes for a successful and satisfying Book Week. Your programme for the week indicates much careful planning by your Committee, and I am sure will reap its reward in developing a real love and appreciation of good reading amongst the young folk in Christchurch. Books are all important: where would our teaching be without them! What progress could we make in learning and living? They are complementary to all other types of teaching and learning. Be it in arts or languages, calculus or religion all other teaching .must be supplemented by recourse to books. They go beyond that. They provide for our leisure hours also. There are such wonderful books for young and old. I hope children and parents in Christchurch and its environs will setae this opportunity of seeing and studying the types of books which are available, and I wish you all the success you deserve. Yours sincerely, (Signed) D. C. PRYOR, President New Zealand Library Association.
