Broke The Law For 60 Years

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 20.

Lord Middleton, Lord Lieutenant of East Riding, Yorkshire, and a recently-appointed Knight of the Garter, found out while sitting as a Magistrate at Malton, Yorkshire, that he had been breaking the law for 60 years. After fining a labourer 5s for fishing without a licence in the River Derwent, Lord Middleton asked the prosecutor: “By the way, do you need a licence to fish in your own private pond?” “Yes,” was the answer.

Lord Middleton smiled and said nothing, but as soon as the Court was over he went to a nearby post office and took out a licence for himself.

“I have been breaking the law for 60 years,” he said later. “I have three ponds which I stock myself, but I didn’t know I had to have a licence to fish in them.” A River Board spokesman said that as a matter of policy it was unlikely the board would prosecute any private fishery owner, but under the law such an owner must have a licence to fish.
