Obituary MR J. S. W. NEILSON

"The Press* Special Service AUCKLAND, August 21. Mr James Swan Wilson Neilson, one of the most renowned Taupo anglers, has died at Rotorua, aged 88. For nearly 50 years Mr Neilson fished the Taupo waters regularly and it was said of him that on the Tongariro river, he knew every pocket of water where a trout was likely to lie. Mr Neilson was born in Scotland and came to New Zealand as a young man. He engaged in pioneering land development on the East Coast and became an expert bushman as well as a most skilled hill-country farmer. As a fly-fisher, Mr Neilson combined great technical skill with a wide practical knowledge of trout and their habits. He was an authority on most aspects of wetfly fishing, particularly on the famous pools of the Tongariro river and he was frequently invited to organise fishing trips for distinguished visitors. Mr Percy Muter, whose death has occurred at Wellington at the age of 94 years, was the first colonial candidate to attain the Fellowship of the Institute of Actuaries, London, under the scheme by which, in 1892, its examinations were extended to the colonies. By 1895 Mr Muter had passed the four difficult examinations to qualify as a fellow. It was authoritatively said at the time that the fellowship corresponded to the higher honour degrees of the universities.” He became deputy Commissioner of and actuary to the New Zealand Government Insurance Department. He was also, ipso facto. Government acutary. Failing eyesight compelled him to resign in 1922, and ultimately he became blind. MR J. G. HIRST (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 21. The death occurred yesterday of one of Wellington’s leading business men, Mr J. G. Hirst. He was aged 57. Mr Hirst, who was managing director of Gollin and Company, Ltd., was born in Southland. During his yquth he was a talented Rugby footballer and represented Canterbury and Auckland. He joined Gollin and Company’s Auckland branch in 1920. After serving in administrative capacities, he was appointed Auckland manager. Mr Hirst was appointed manager for New Zealand in 1947 and moved to Wellington. He became managing-director in 1952, and held this position till his death. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Jacqueline.
