Racing 3-YEAR-OLD CAPTAIN HUNT HAS NEW OWNER

Mrs K. McKenzie, of Oxford, has sold the promising three-year-old Captain Hunt to Mr J. O. Douglas, of Waikouaiti.

Captain Hunt raced once at the Grand National meeting, finishing fourth in the Cashmere Plate, won by Yukon. He raced three times last season, and was third in the first division of the Haldon Stakes at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting.

Captain Hunt is by Treasure Hunt from the Balboa mare, Boeform, which showed good form as a sprinter in Southland, and has already left the winners, Magnaform, Formation, Formal, Zingabo, and Water Boy. Like Water Boy, Captain Hunt is trained at Riccarton by R. E. Humphries. Should Be Fit

Canon was brought to Riccarton withr other members of W. E. Hancock’s Wingatui team but did not race at the Grand National meeting. His work at Riccarton was good and he should be well forward for the Tally-Ho Handicap at the Otago Hunt meeting on Saturday. Canon is top weight with 9-0. He will probably have trouble in conceding the Riccarton-trained Gay Tommy 211 b if the ground is heavy.

For John Grigg Stakes The Wingatui stablemates, Bow Ti and Surapt, are making pleasing progress in preparation for the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton next month.

Surapt usually gives of his best on the tracks, and his recent work has been of a high standard. Bow Tie. on the other hand, has seldom done anything of note in his training, but his first-season form was highb promising and longer races will, perhaps, show him to greater advantage than they will Surapt. Heavy Track Likely Wingatui had rain yesterday, and the ground will probably be heavy for the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday. Some of the horses scheduled to make fresh starts will probably drop out oi the fields if winter track conditions K are offered. Gabriel’s Gully, a double acceptor, will probably be reserved for the B. S. Irwin Steeplechase. He did not thrive after the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting, where he won the Westrenra Cup, and was an expensive favourite in the Hunt Cup on the second day of the Grand National meeting

English Trainer’s Record

Noel Murless. the Newmarket trainer, set up a record for the amount of stakes won by an English trainer in one year when the Queen’s filly, Candytuft, won the Alfriston Stakes at Brighton on August 8. Murless’s horses had then won £94,080 14s, and there were still 14 weeks left before the end of the season. The previous record was J. Lawson’s £93,899 10s in 1931. Noel Murless’s successes this season include the Derby and Two Thousand Guineas with Crepello, the Oaks with the Queen’s Carrozza, the Queen Mary Stakes (Ascot) with Abelia, and the Eclipse Stakes (Sandown Park) and the King Edward VII Stakes (Ascot) with Arctic Explorer. From Successful Family Arthur’s Count, which made a successful start for the season at Matamata last Saturday, belongs to a family which was well to the fore in Canterbury a few years ago. He is by Count Rendered from Love Letter, a mare by the imported Parchment from Sweet Beauty. Love Letter won two

races. She is a half-sister to Lord Advocate, which had nine successes including the Great Easter Handicap; Treasurer, winner of the Winter Cup and nine other races; Cottingham, a Grand National Hurdles winner; Rebel Star, Kirkella, Bitter Sweet, and Palmyra. Sweet Beauty did not race. She was a half-sister to Giggleswick, winner of 22 races, Polydoraj winner of 13 races, King’s Jester, Scarlet Pimpernel, and Ryetown, all winners. Polydora left Instinctive, winner of four races, and was the granddam of Inclination and Sell Defence, both good winners. Arthur’s Count was offered at the 1956 sales but was passed in at 1350gns.
