SOVIET ARMS FOR ARABS
Glut Of Supplies
Reported (N-Z- Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 20. Admiral Arthur Radford, retiring Chairman of the Joint United States Chiefs of Staff, told Senators yesterday that the Soviet Union was glutting some Middle East nations with arms they could not use, just to impress the population with Communist willingness to aid them.
Moreover, Admiral Radford said, if the arms were to be used an unlimited number of Russians would have to be moved in to fly the planes and man the tanks which were being sent. Admiral Radford was giving testimony at a closed session of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
The Secretary of State, Mr Dulles, told the committee that the situation in Syria was “not a wholly unexpected development.”
Soviet foreign policy remained consistently ruthless, he said.
“There are few episodes in history as ruthless as the Hungarian suppression, or as malicious and mischievous as the activities which are being conducted in the Middle East,” he said.'
"Instead of seeking settlements of the problems that distress the area, every opportunity is taken by the Russians to exaggerate the situation ana to make it worse,” said Mr Dulles.
