EARTHQUAKE IN NORTH ISLAND
Coincidence With Radio Fault Wsw Zealand Prm Association) WELLINGTON. Aug. 21. The Wanganui radio station developed a technical fault and went off the air at the moment an earthquake hit the Wanganui area this evening. The breakdown, coinciding with the earthquake, resulted in many listeners linking the two and believing that it might have been serious. But the break in transmission had no connexion with the tremor. The sharp earthquake shook the lower part of the North Island shortly before 6 o’clock. Hie shock rocked buildings and startled people into running from their houses into the streets, but no damage has been reported from any centre. It shook Wellington at 5.47 p.m. and lasted about 30 seconds, building up gradually to a sharp jolt, then subsiding.
