Canadian Geese
Sir,—l have been taught why spies are heroes in the country which pays them, but traitors in “the other land.” Therefore I am keen to learn why Canadian geese are classified as vermin “west of the South Island main trunk railway line.” A child once said: “I understand that pigs are called pigs, for they are very dirty things.” I do not like Canadian geese to be classified as vermin. Birds of high flight and high intelligence, an inspiration to musicians, painters, poets, and thinkers, should be protected from the cruelty of man, who has to hire an aeroplane to fly as high as they do. Man’s word should try to fly higher and to understand that, “As we sow, so also shall we reap.”—Yours, etc., L.S. August 4, 1957.
