Southland Beats North Otago
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, August 4. The- Southland Rugby team was hard pressed to beat. North Otago by only three points yesterday in the first representative Rugby game in Invercargill this season. Both sides scored three tires. The final score was 14-11. Playing on a ground which was hard beneath, but with a sticky surface, Southland had much the better of the game, but failed to press home its advantage. The game was a disappointing rehearsal for Southland for its game with Otago next Saturday, but the team shaped as If it would be a force to be reckoned with on a dry ground. W. Archer made a splendid debut at second five-eighths for Southland, and with the All Blacks R. Archer and J. R. Watt, formed a strong attacking combination.
J. W. Hamilton was in fine form for North Otago, but was shaded by Watt in an exciting duel. W. Archer, G. Erskine and D. L. Ashby scored tries for Southland: Ashby converted one and Watt kicked a penalty goal. For North Otago, Hamilton, L. Winchester and M. Direen scored tries, R. Direen converting one.
