INCREASE IN FREIGHTS
Effect On Dairy
Price
(New Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 4.
The increased shipping freight rates announ-ed en Friday ■wi’l'oe taken lute account by. the -Dairy- Pricefixin* Authority at its first meeting in Wellington on Friday to discuss the guaranteed price for New Zealand dariy products for the 1957-58 season, said Mr R- A. Cindy, chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Products Marketing
Commission today. In a telephone interview from Ngarua, he srid the higher freights represented a serious cost increase for New Zealand and would add about £500,000 to the annual freight bill of the, dairy industry. e ' On a butterfat basis, the increases were equivalent to Id a lb for butter, id a lb for cheese, .2d a lb for milk powder, and .Id a lb for casein,' Mr Candy: said.
“I must admit; however, that the accountants’ report indicated that a higher percentage than that finally agreed upon was justified,” Mr Candy said. “That announced represents 11J cent. fo£ refrigerated dairy products and varying amounts for non-refriger-ated products.
“These are less than those fixed for meat and fruit because changed responsibilities under the contract of the shipping lines have resulted in a great, percentage saving to dairy products than in the case with meat. That is the sole reaspn for the different figures for the two;major industries.” ,
