Multigrade oil protects at all temperatures it’s thermostatic

Automatically adjusts to every engine heat - from starting cold to highway hot

On any day, winter or summer, your car’s engine undergoes temperature changes of over 100’F. New Shell X-100 Multigrade Oil adjusts to all these temperatures automatically. It’s thermostatic actually 3 grades of motor oil in one to protect your engine whether it’s hot or cold. A Light Oil First, since your engine always starts cold, Shell X-100 Multigrade Oil adjusts to the special demands of cold engine operation. Like a light oil, it flows freely, saving your engine the extra work of pushing a heavy oil. You start quickly, get full power fast. You save petrol. A Medftiin-weight Oil During short-trip driving, when the engine’s barely warm, X-100 Multigrade adjusts to moderate temperature conditions, is like a medium-weight oil. It cuts engine drag and power loss, ensures livelier performance.

A Heavy Oil Then, at highway speeds, when your engine runs hot, X-100 Multigrade adjusts again to resist thinning out, to fully protect under heat. It’s like a heavy oil, holds its body.

Three Oils in One Shell X-100 Multigrade Oil keeps working surfaces constantly covered with a tenacious oil film, reducing engine wear. It protects the engine when it’s cold, when it’s hot, when it’s operating at low speed, at high speed, under all climatic and driving conditions.

Shell X-100 Multigrade keeps the engine clean, free from harmful deposits that stifle performance and cause wear. A clean engine lasts longer. It’s a stable oil; it resists oxidation under heat and the formation of sludge. And X-100 Multigrade is an alkaline motor oil; it adds to the life of the engine because it neutralizes acid action.

J. O. Howie, Shell Lubricants Manager, Tells How Shell X-100 Multigrade Oil Brings You Savings On Petrol

“Previously when you started your car while it was cold, the engine had to push stiff, sluggish oil around. This wasted petrol, reduced the mileage you got from a gallon. Shell X-100 Multigrade Oil stops this wastage because it flows freely even when cold. There’s no oil drag with X-100 Multigrade. You start quickly, with reduced period of warm-up. The horsepower previously lost is now converted to fast pick-up. You get full power right away. And, most important, you get instant lubrication to protect your engine.

A Motor Oil that Saves Money “Not only does this Shell X-100 Multigrade save you money on petrol, it saves you money on maintenance costs. Your engine gets full protection at the period when most wear occurs, starting and during the time that the cold engine is warming up. Shell X-100 Multigrade gives full, sure lubrication the instant you press the starter. <

“Shell X-100 Multigrade saves your battery, too, because you start more easily when the engine is cold.

“With higher mileage from a gallon of petrol, livelier performance, reduced engine repair bills, and longer

battery life, you make considerable savings with Shell X-100 Multigrade Oil. It costs a little extra to produce, but 'the petrol savings alone more than offset the slight extra cost. Here is an oil that saves money on petrol.”

NEW ZEALAND’S LEADING OIL SCIENTIST EXPLAINS HOW THERMOSTATIC SHELL X-100 MULTIGRADE OILS AUTOMATICALLY ADJUST TO ALL DRIVING CONDITIONS “It is no exaggeration to say that the new Shell X-100 Multigrade Oils bring an entirely new conception to engine lubrication and protection. Fellow scientists in the research centres of the Shell organisation in America, England and on the Continent had already made a noteworthy advance in lubrication technology when they perfected the range of standard Shell X-100 additive motor oils in the immediate post-war years. Now, with these new multigrade oils, they have made an even more important advance. “Shell scientists were faced with the problem of finding a motor oil that would do its job efficiently under all climatic conditions and for all driving conditions. Weather conditions vary considerably in New Zealand. Was there one oil that could give perfect lubrication in Auckland and in Queenstown? Driving methods vary. One driver uses his car only to drive to and from the office. Another, a commercial traveller, spends most of the day driving. Was there one oil that would do the two widely different jobs that these two motorists asked of motor oil?

COMPRESSION RATIOS ARE CHANGING “In addition, car engines were changing,, operating at higher compression ratios, at higher temperatures. This further complicated the search for one oil that would protect at all engine temperatures. “But Shell scientists succeeded in formulating a motor oil that would flow as freely when cold as a light grade oil, yet be as completely protective as a heavy grade when the engine had heated up. New Shell X-100 Multigrade Oils—thermostatically compounded to adjust automatically to all engine temperatures —-have been proven, on the road throughout New Zealand, to give maximum protection however hot or however cold the engine.

PROTECTION IN THE GARAGE “It even protects the engine while the car is standing in the garage at night. Shell scientists discovered that corrosive acid action, not abrasion, was the main cause of engine wear, and that this acid action went on day and night. Shell X-100 Multigrade Oil neutralizes acid action, covers all working parts of the engine with a protecting film of oil that stubbornly resists shifting.

SHELL X-100 MULTIGRADE CLINGS PROTECTIVELY TO METAL IN SPITE OF HEAT

X-100’8 PROTECTIVE QUALITIES

The tenacity of this oil film was effectively demonstrated in an experiment conducted at the Shell Laboratory, Wellington. Two pieces of metal dipped in oil. One in ordinary lubricating oil, the other in Shell X-100 Multigrade. A jet of steam is played on each for two minutes. Ordinary oil soon breaks up and rust appears, as shown on the unretouched photograph on the left. Shell X-100 remains in a strong protective coating, as the sample on the right shows, protecting . against rust, acid action and corrosion.

TWO MULTIGRADES ESSENTIAL “There are actually two types of Shell X-100 Multigrade Oil, one for comparatively new cars and one for older cars and heavy vehicles. Shell 10W/30 combines the properties of S.A.E. 10W oil, S.A.E. 20W and S.A.E. 30. That is, it flows as freely as light 10W oil when the engine is cold, while at the same time it provides the protection of heavy grade oil at high temperatures. “But no multigrade oil can simultaneously meet more than three S.A.E. numbers, and where there is need for an oil giving the extra protection of 40 grade, for cars with higher mileage and for trucks and other heavy vehicles, Shell produces 20W/40 Multigrade, combining the characteristics of 20W, 30 and 40 grade oils. “These two Shell X-100 Multigrade Oils . . . 10W/30 for low mileage cars and 20W/40 for higher mileage cars . . . provide what is undoubtedly the most complete protection and the most perfect lubrication for all types of cars and trucks.”
