Arabs Welcome U.S. Speech
(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 4,
Arab diplomats in Washington yesterday welcomed enthusiastically the plea made on Tuesday by Senator John Kennedy (Democrat, Massachusetts) for the United States to exert its influence in the Algerian crisis.
Iraq’s Charge d’Affaires, Mr Hashim Khalil, said he admired Senator Kennedy’s courage. “It happened to be the first time that somebody had the courage to raise his voice and declare that Algeria is not France’s business alone,” he said.
Senator Kennedy’s speech aroused no enthusiasm in President Eisenhower. Some members of Congress also disagreed with the Senator.
The President, at his press conference yesterday, said he agrees with the position stated by the Secretary of State, Mr Dulles, who was cool to such a move. Mr Emanuel Celler (Democrat, New York), chairman of the
House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, also took issue with Senator Kennedy He said in a statement that Senator Kennedy’s proposal at this time was as immature as it was unfair.
