Eightsome Reel
In Kilts
Relaxing from the cares of surgery and hospital, more than 200 doctors and their wives attended a ball at the Winter Garden, organised by the Canterbury division of the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association. last evening. Mr H. E. H. Denham, president of the division, and Mrs Denham received the guests. Specially-invited guests included Mr R. H. Mottram, president of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Dental Association, and Mrs Mottram; Mr H. Hay, president of the CanterburyWestland branch of the New Zealand Society of Accountants, and Mrs Hay; Mr R. A. Young, president of the Canterbury District Law Society, and Mrs Young; and Mr C. S. Ell, president of the Canterbury Chemists’ Service Guild, and Mrs Ell.
During the evening the president and his party presented an eightsome reel, for which the men changed into kilts. Music for the reel was played by a piper from the St. Andrew’s College Pipe Band. Earlier, a ballroomdancing exhibition was given by Mr and Mrs G. Kerr. Cream Brocade Mrs Denham wore a frock of cream brocade with a very full skirt. The tight-fitting bodice had a softly-draped neckline. On the waistline at the back was a large bow of the same material.
The convener of the committee, Mrs H. T. Jennings, wore a frock of shot pink and blue silk organza with a bouffant skirt. A large spray of pink roses was placed from a shoulder across the tightfitting strapless bodice. Bowls of flowers, including irises, anemones, and stocks, decorated the lounge. In the alcoves posies of everlasting flowers were set on the tables. In tne supper room silver candelabra with sprays of red anemones were featured on the tables.
Dr. W. J. Pryor, secretary of the division, and Dr. C. J. Morkane, social secretary, were assisted by a women’s committee, including Mesdames H. T. Jennings (convener), H. E. H. Denham, W. J. Pryor, and D. E. Orchard, in arranging the ball.
