MANAPOURI AS POWER LAKE
Possible Use Discussed
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, May 22.
In spite of a report from Wellington to the contrary published last month, it would seem that there is still a possibility of Lake Manapouri being used as a source for hydro-electric power. The previous report said it was known that there was nothing in a special report to the Government on New Zealand’s power needs for the next 20 years which planned the use of Manapouri. Inquiries made today showed that the Lands and Survey Department has received confirmation of its previous policy of not opening sections at Manapouri for selection because of the possibility of the lake being harnessed for power.
An official of the State Hydroelectric Department said that no information had been received in Invercargill whether it was planned to use Manapouri or, if it was to be used, when. TV ese questions, he said, would be decided at the highest level; but there was still a possibility that Manapouri would be used some time in the future.
