CASHING STRANGE CHEQUES
Banker’s Advice On i Precautions (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 22. Care should be exercised before cheques were cashed for strangers, said Mr C. P. Edwards, chairman of Associated Banks, in a statement issued today. Reports from all over the country in the newspaper and the experience of the banks had indicated that there were an increasing number of attempts to obtain money or goods fraudulently by use of valueless cheques, said Mr Edwards. He said that if the following precautions were taken by the commercial community and the public the risk of loss could be minimised: If the person presenting the cheque is unknown, insist on some reliable identification. Have the cheque endorsed by the presenter, who should be asked to add his home address. Authorise senior staff only to accept cheques in payment for goods, or cashing. View with suspicion those cases where a cheque in excess of the value of the goods is tendered and the balance is. requested in cash.
