ARMY MAY RULE HAITI
(NJ!. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 21 . Control of Haiti appeared about to be taken over by the military, said press agency and newspaper reports from Port au Prince today. Haiti’s leading army officers convened an emergency meeting last night to consider assuming the governing power after BrigadierGeneral Leon Cantaye defied an order from the seven-man executive council that he resign as Chief of the Army. . Defiance of the council spread outside Port au Prince. A “committee for public safety” at Cape Haitien said that it would rule all northern Haiti until a new President was elected. The committee was believed to be linked with a similar rebel group, at St. Marc. Port au Prince appeared quiet during the night, but tension was fiigh. The newspaper “Le Jour” predicted the urgent conference of army leaders would result in an announcement that the military was taking over the government.
