Sir,—Mr Walter Nash hints "hat New Zealand should do more i for defence of the Commonwealth (Then he expatiates on the present terrific cost of defence ranging I from £2O to £24 a head for every i man, woman, child, and baby in i New Zealand. Most of this £40.000.000 per annum is just squandered in inefficient administration in this H-bomb era. Unless we sack the present tribe of inefficient ambassadors and Ministers of Foreign Affairs, we are likely to go on blundering and squandering on useless wars. This is an age when public opinion is becoming better informed’ as the Suez crisis revealed in Great Britain. Here the population was equally divided on a policy which ultimately ended in disaster. As one of the promoters of the era of the welfare State, ,Mr Nash could easily have suggested that perhaps its inauguration in other countries might be useful.—Yours etc., RALPH S. WHEELER.
