Ship’s Officer On Rape Charge
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 22. James William Hale, aged 26, a ship’s officer on the Papanui, was charged with the rape of a 17-year-old girl at Auckland on May 7 when he appeared before Mr M. C. Astley,. S.M., in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court today. The police prosecutor (Mr J. G. B. Rossiter) called the girl to give evidence that she went to a party on board the ship with the accused. After she had some drink on board she remembered nothing until she found the accused attempting the offence in the garden of her boardinghouse. She called for help. The hearing was adjourned until further evidence can be received.
