COMMISSIONS IN REGULAR ARMY
Three Nominees For Australia A 20-year-old infantry instructor at Burnham Military Camp has been nominated by the Southern Military District for an appointment to a Regular Force commission, followed by a year’s course at the Australian Army officers’ cadet school, PortHe is Lance-Corporal Quinton A. Rodda, son of Mr and Mrs A. J. Rodda, of Omihi, North Canterbury. Lance-Corporal Rodda, who was educated at Christchurch Boys’ High School, entered the Regular Force cadets in 1954. His brother, Lieutenant D. G. Rodda, of Christchurch, graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, the same year. Other nominations from Southern Military District are Second Lieutenant ‘R. T. Tudehope, of Papanui; and Bombardier J. P. Horne, of Burnham. Lieutenant Tudehope is a territorial officer attached to the 3rd Infantry Workshops, Christchurch. He is aged 23. Bombardier Horne, who is aged 22, is an, artillery instructor at Burnham camp. He 'was a trainee in the thirteenth intake to the cainp and joined the Regular Force in 1954. Second Draft The three nominees announced yesterday comprise the second draft of candidates for Portsea, which the New Zealand Army is now using under a new scheme to give selected regular noncommissioned officers and territorial n.c.o.’s- and officers the opportunity of obtaining commissions which they would otherwise have little chance of obtaining. Lieutenant Tudehope, Bombadier Horne and Lance-Corporal Rodda have to attend a Regular Officers’ selections board at Linton camp on May 27 and 28 for approval of their nominations. Two soldiers from Christchurch are already at Portsea under the scheme. They are LanceCorporal J. T. Skedden, New Zealand Army Ordnance Corps; and P. D. B. Scott, New Zealand Regiment.
International Convention.—New Zealand has joined the international convention to facilitatethe importation of commercial samples and advertising material. When he announced this yesterday, the Minister of Customs (Mr E. H. Halstead) said that there were 22 other countries in the convention, which sought to make easier the interchange of commercial samples and advertising material.—(PA.)
