RATES ON LAND FOR ROADING

Farmers Repeat Opposition (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 22. The Auckland provincial conference of Federated Farmers todr ' passed a resolution reaffirming its opposition to rating farmlands for roading purposes. The conference decided to press for the gradual transfer of roading finance from rating to taxation on the user. That would mean that the cost of constructing and maintaining roads would be found gradually from petrol and other forms of motor taxation, so that after five years the whole cost would be financed by that means. Mr H. G. Phillips said farmers would pay their share as users, but objected to paying twice. While the suggested remedy might increase the cost of heavy traffic licences or petrol, it would reduce the cost of maintaing vehicles because of the better roads which would result.
