Freight Rise Predicted
(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, May 22. Export industries are facing the danger of another increase, of 5 per cent, or more, in overseas freight rates, the Canberra correspondent of the Melbourne “Herald” reported today. It was learned authoritatively today that overseas shippers have proposed a further increase in rates to meet increases in shipping costs, he said. Negotiations on the request have been opened in London between representatives of the shipowners and of Australian export shippers, the correspondent said. It is expected that if agreement is reached it will become effective in the second half of this year and apply to most of next season’s exports, the correspondent said.
