RABBIT BOARDS’ POISON

Improper Use Alleged

“I have proof that opossums are being collected by rabbit board employees—and they are getting paid opossum bounties,” Mr G. B. Baker, a member of the Rabbit Destruction Council, told the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Rabbit Boards’ Council yesterday. Rabbit boards funds were being used to hunt opossums rather than rabbits, he alleged. “In the North Island i saw where a man had put out enough poison to get opossums as well as rabbits. He got eight rabbits and 190 opossums. He had to put down enough rabbit board poison to get both. “They are not night shooting rabbits to eradicate this pest; they are night shooting opossums by connivance and with surreptitious use of board time and poison,” said Mr Baker. The opossum problem in New Zealand was one which had been concerning rabbit boards throughout New Zealand and would no doubt be the centre of many discussions between the boards and other departments, he said.
