racing Tut Tut May Win Ashburton Steeples

Steeplechases over the not-so-diflicult Ashburton course have often been comedies of errors Jliere are some inexperienced jumpers in the field ' he , A , lford 4 . J? acl s a n d Hunters’ Steeplechase on the first day of the Ashburton County Racing Club’s autumn meeting today, and it will be strange if the race lacks incident.

Border Reiver, topweight with 10-10 today, won a year ago with 10-3. He was one of the three . of 10 which finished the course ’ .without a mistake. Seven ran . off, but two of them were taken : back to complete the course. , Jumping ability should keep ; Border Reiver out of trouble today. but it is to be wondered whether he will have the condi- ' tion to run out two miles and a half strongly enough to win. X The Peerswick Hurdles at Riccarton last Saturday—he finished , well back—was Border Reiver’s first race since his Alford Steeples ?. fuccess a year ago.

The eight-year-old Border Reiver is twice the age of the In-vercargill-trained Tut Tut, which is equal top weight. . Tut Tut has no public form as a steeplechaser, but he was a success as a hurdler, and he belongs to the of Mr W. E. Hazlett, whose cross-country horses have usually been given a thorough grounding as jumpers. , Composition raced without dash in two hack steeplechases at Riverton, but some improvement can be looked for unless he has slipped since last year, when he won the Otago Hunt Club Steeple- * chase at Wingatui. The Orari-trained Prosecutor is Still in the early stages of his winter campaign, but in his second start last season he won over : country at Washdyke, and two ; minor placings on the same course ' followed. Prosecutor may be too good for ? those below him in the weights, ' although Escalado is fairly well seasoned, and was reliable in his jumping as a hurdler. The successful owner will receive a canteen of cutlery, the trainer a bridle, and the jockey a wristlet watch. Lightning Boy was scratched yesterday for the Rakaia Hack Handicap, the second leg of the double, leaving 11 starters. Kotiti was an earlier scratching, but is engaged in the Eiffelton Hack Handicap. Massive Selected Massive, from Orari, Winning , . Treasure and Sweet Christine from Riccarton. and the Wingatuitrained Winning Wave are ex--1 • pected to dominate the finish of * the Rakaia Handicap. , < A win for Motueka in the first leg, the Ashburton County Handicap. would be highly popular after ; some sound runs for minor 1 - placings lately. L Riccarton stables will provide all but three of the runners, and : . the best of their representatives \ appear to hold a firm grip on the race.. Motueka is likely to be tested most by Rise and Shine, and Merrimayes if the track is reasonably firm. If the groflnd is soft • or holding Desperado will firm in favour. Desperado has dropped steadily ' in the weights—he carried 9-2 into fourth place in this race a year ago—but there was promise of ‘ improvement to a barren record for the season in his sixth hi the Waltham Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday. The Hurdles Betting on the Longbeach Hurdles will probably be dominated by Lo Night and Walkova. The Riccarton form of these two horses was good—Lo Night won the Kildare Hurdles, and Walkova was a close second to Flying Doctor in the Peerswick Hurdles. The strongest favourite on the programme will probably be Sun House, the topweight in the Chatmos Hack Handicap. Sun House was the outstanding hack stayer at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, winning twice in three starts. She is a strong mare, and should not find top weight of 9-0 too burdensome.
