Papal Guards Arrest “ Pilgrim ”
<Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON. May 3. Papal guards armed with pikes helped to arrest a young man who was ttying to steal two of the most valuable items of St. Peter’s Treasure, the “Daily Express” said today.
The man joined a group of pilgrims visiting the treasure—and got himself locked in. He drew a hammer from under his raincoat, smashed the glass pane protecting the silver and gold 4th Century Cross which belonged to Emperor Justin II and another cross studded with large diamonds (with a bullion value of £10,000), the “Daily Express” said. Two keepers heard the noise. They unlocked the treasure door and tiptoed in to find the man just reaching out for the two crosses. The man shook off the keepers and ran towards the exit but at the door he was stopped by two Papal Guards. He was handed over to the Italian police. The “Daily Express” said the attempted theft took place on Wednesday evening, but was disclosed only yesterday after a secret inquiry.
