Practical Dressing At Addington It takes more than heavy rain to keep the public away from trotting meetings, and when the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club held the third programme of its Easter meeting at Addington on Saturday women were prominent among the spectators. , Dressed in raincoats or last years’ topcoats, sensible footwear and hats they were not afraid to ruin, women patrons had an enjoyable day trying to pick “mudlarks” to win. Bright-coloured umbrellas, sometimes matching raincoat and rain hat, stood out gaily on the course as well as serving as a protection when women camo off the stands between races. For drivers and horses it was a different matter. Their, tasks could not have been much more uncomfortable. As the horses passed the stand, the noise of their hooves slushing through the thick mud sounded like an electric beater whipping up a bowl of treacle. When the drivers returned to the birdcage they looked as if they had been given mud pack facial treatments and the horses, when pulled up, resembled steaming clay models. Official Guests, Mrs W. M.- Ollivier, wife of the club president, entertained a number of women in the stewards’ stand, most of whom were wives of trotting club officials. They included Mesdames J. K. Davidson, C. E. Hov. C. S. Thomas, A. l’ Matson, O. Hutchinson, D. C. Parker, W. Toomey, S. J. Moore, L. A. Bennett, R. E. Booker, M. J. Wellwood, C. S. Peate and R. J. McLeod. A specially-invited guest was Mrs T. A. Gresson, wife of Mr Justice Gresson, who is visiting Christchurch with her husband.
