Desoxyribonucleic acid (D;N A ) the first production of which was announced yesterday, may help in the fight against cancer. lhe acid, a basic chemical of life, has been produced in a test tube for the first time. Dr. Maurice Eessman, a microbiologist of the School of Medicine of _ Washington University. St. Louis, Missouri, is one of four scientists who produced the chemical. He announced its discovery at Chicago yesterday. The acid produced in the test tube appears to be the same as that found in all living things. It holds secrets of heredity, such as the colour of eyes, height, and other inherited characteristics. Scientists must now deterrhine whether the synthetic D.N.A. can be used by living cells and, if so, what happens to the cells. Their findings may help in the search for chemicals which will block the -manufacture of D.N.A. in cancer cells. Such a blocking would stop their growth without harming normal cells.
